When to Replace Your Plumbing

When to Replace Your Plumbing

There comes a time in every homeowner’s life when their pipes hit the end of their lifespan. While this can sometimes be a difficult decision to make, plumbing does not last forever. Pipes may fail due to several reasons, whether it be extreme changes in weather, poor maintenance, faulty installation, or just age alone.

Today, we will be covering the most common signs that you may need some new pipes.

Aging Material

Pipes can be made of many types of materials, with some lasting longer than others. Depending on what time of material your pipes are made of may indicate when they need to be replaced. Copper pipes can last from around 20 to 50 years, depending on their maintenance, while cast iron pipes and brass pipes can last as long as 100 years. If your pipes are starting to fail around that material’s average lifespan, it might be time to make some changes.

Damage

You know your house has a plumbing issue when you see leaks, cracks, corrosion, or severe rusting on the pipes. If there are issues with the pipes that you cannot see, most of the time, there are other signs of damage you can look for. If you notice that part of your floor is damp or warped, or if you see signs of mold, this can often be a sign of plumbing leakage.

Also, look out for brown-colored water, as this can be a sign of severe rust. If all of your water is discolored, it could be an issue with your city’s water system. But if only certain sinks are discolored, it may be a sign to clean or replace your pipes!
