Plumbing problems can happen at any time of the year, but each season has a unique set. This summer, keep an eye out for these four common plumbing problems.
Clogs
Pool parties, barbecues, and kids playing with their friends all day long are all hallmarks of the season. Unfortunately, they’re also capable of causing clogs simply because more people will be using the plumbing. On these busy summer days, keep an eye on your drains.
Similarly, having kids home playing outside all day can result in greater laundry loads and, thus in overloaded washing machines.
Leaks
When metal gets hot, it expands. This is true of pipes, and it can result in your pipes bending and breaking once they reach a point where they can’t expand further. In the worst-case scenarios, they may even burst!
Sprinklers can also leak, especially when kids are playing in them. Because these can be hard to detect, you may not notice until they run up your water bill.
Water Heater Failure
Your water heater can get more stressed when it’s hot out. At the same time, the more hot water that’s used in the summer can put a strain on the water heater. The heater may even get too hot and overheat, especially since the sunlight can heat water up.
Floods
Summer floods can be caused by damaged underground pipes or by intense summer thunderstorms leaking into basements and causing pipes to overflow. Keep an eye on your sump pump this summer, especially if you expect bad weather.
Higher Water Bills
All of these problems and more can cause your water bills to grow. From the water heater needing more energy to bring you hot water, to undetected leaks, to the simple fact that people will be using water more often, if you aren’t careful this season, you may see a spike in how much you owe.
